National Health Center Week 2019: “Rooted in Communities”

National Health Center Week (August 4th-10th) is an annual celebration with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past five decades.

Health centers are locally-run yet part of a national network that serves 1 in 12 Americans, or 28 million people.

Highlights of Health Center Accomplishments include:

  • They save American tax payers $24 billion a year in health care costs by preventing and managing chronic diseases.
  • Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the emergency room
  • Lowering the cost of children’s primary care by approximately 35 percent
  • Serving over 355,000 veterans throughout the country

This year, we are celebrating the ways that health centers are “Rooted in Communities”.

Health centers are at the forefront of a nationwide shift in addressing environmental and social factors as an integral part of primary care, reaching beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the factors that may cause sickness, such as lack of nutrition, mental illness, homelessness and substance use disorders.
