June 10, 2020How to Get Ready for a Virtual Tele-Health Appointment
July 14, 2020For many men, months at home during the COVID-19 outbreak led to the development of unhealthy habits, like poor diet and less exercise. Now that many social distancing restrictions are easing, it’s time to refocus on your health and wellness. This June, join us in recognizing Men’s Health Month by taking three healthy actions.
The Goal of June’s Men’s Health Month
Men’s Health Month is observed every June to help to raise awareness about preventive health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. During these 30 days, men and boys are encouraged to visit with a health professional for routine or preventive care.
3 Healthy Actions for Men to Take This June
1) Get 30 Minutes of Exercise Daily
Although we are all guilty of being lazy sometimes, too much sitting around can negatively affect your health. Instead of watching reruns on TV all day, try doing physical activity, like walking for exercise.
To improve your health and wellness, all adult men should aim to do at least:
- Two hours and 30 minutes to five hours a week of moderate-intensity activity
- One hour and 15 minutes to two hours and 30 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity
- Or, an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity
To get the most out of these benefits, it is recommended to spread your physical activity out over the course of the week.
2) Monitor Your Mental Health
The coronavirus pandemic has been a challenging time for New Yorkers, especially for men who are already dealing with mental health issues. Whether you have a pre-existing condition or not, it’s always helpful to keep a close eye on your mental health.
Certain warning signs in men could signal the need for mental/behavioral health services. During June’s Men’s Health Month, take a moment to consider if you have experienced any of these common symptoms:
- Anger, irritability or aggressiveness
- Noticeable changes in mood, energy level or appetite
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Difficulty concentrating or feelings of restlessness
- Increased anxiety or feelings of stress
- Misuse of alcohol and/or drugs
- Feelings of sadness or hopelessness
- Engaging in high-risk activities
Today, it is easier and more convenient than ever to receive mental/behavioral health services. Virtual tele-health appointments are now an option for our new and current patients.
3) Schedule Regular Medical Check-Ups
Regular medical check-ups are another key part of health. Exams and tests can detect health issues early, before they develop into more major problems. Early detection improves the chances of treating and curing medical issues.
For example, heart disease, the leading cause of death for men in the United States today, is responsible for about one in four male deaths every year. For preventable diseases like this, routine health care appointments can help to identify medical conditions and lifestyle choices, including diabetes, obesity and poor diet. All of which are risk factors for heart disease.
